Typically, I work by simply showing up and capturing whats going on, but this was even one step further. .
We were visiting a school @LifewaterInternational works with in rural Uganda (partnering to provide bathrooms and a handicap-accessible water source), when we walked outside the school grounds to the nearest water source. And to the surprise of not only me, but to all the local Lifewater staff, the well was being repaired.
It took a couple seconds to sink in, but I quickly realized, what I was seeing- the Lifewater model was working! You see, there is a always a lot of talk about sustainability, but when you see it happen, its incredible. Lifewater works with the community using local technology, training local influencers, using local leadership, and where the community contributes into the cost of the water source. Then a committee is formed which oversees monthly payments (that everyone can afford) and that are saved for future well maintenance and repair.
And this is what we happened upon. The well had broke. The community was trained. The committee had saved the money. Now, repairs were being made solely by the community and no outside help was needed. That’s sustainability.
